CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Champlain Valley Christian School engaged in a Pre-campaign Survey early in 2002. What level of support for this project did the study indicate? A Pre-Campaign Study, conducted by The Timothy Group of Grand Rapids, Michigan, indicated broad constituent support for the school in terms of having its own identity and facility separate from the current church facility. The desire to become a school better able to serve the broader Vergennes community and surrounding area was also indicated. How was the campaign goal of $500,000 arrived at? In the Pre-Campaign Study report, The Timothy Group recommended that a goal of $400,000 to $500,000 could likely be raised in a three-year capital campaign. This is based on their review of the study findings, "estimated" support indicated by study participants, and their professional judgment given their experience doing these types of studies for Christian schools. This amount did not include any contributions from large foundation grants or outside groups. How will we know what size facility to build and where? The school has contracted with the Breadloaf Corporation to prepare a master site plan. This plan will indicate the best use of the site and offer building options to be considered. Will the entire facility be built at the same time? What are the planned phases? As planned right now, the new facility would be constructed in three phases, as described in the funding proposal and campaign brochure. This is a projected plan of action. Several factors could alter this plan, including the feasibility study of the site and the amount of money raised through this campaign. How much will the building actually cost? Although the actual cost is not known at this time, it is felt that a conservative "projected" cost for Phase I of a facility of approximately 10,000 square feet is $1,000,000. This is using average school construction figures. There will be no cost for the land as it will be donated by Champlain Valley Christian Reformed Church. The final cost could go up or down depending on size and design as well as our ability to secure in-kind contributions of services and materials. Where will high school classes meet if only grades K-8 are housed in the new facility in Phase I? To start, high school grades would remain in the current Champlain Valley Christian Reformed Church facility. The church has approved a conditional arrangement that will work. The plan is to eventually house K-12 in one facility once all phases are complete. The case statement proposes a facility that could house up to 260 students. Where did that enrollment projection come from? It is not intended to be an enrollment projection. The committee simply believes that the wisest thing to do is plan for a facility that could eventually house the entire K-12 school. Given an average of 20 students per grade level in single classes, this would require a 260 student capacity upon the completion of Phase III. Will this campaign change the current board or society structure in any way? No, the campaign has no bearing on the current board or society structure. Those are issues for the school board to consider if and when they decide. Is the land adjacent to Champlain Valley Christian Reformed Church being transferred over to the school? If so, when? Yes, the Champlain Valley CRC's intention is to transfer ownership of a parcel of land to the school society, sufficient for construction of a new facility. This transfer will occur upon successful completion of the township permitting process. What will be done with the land donated to the school by Champlain Valley CRC in the event the school will be unable to stay financially solvent after a building is built? In the event of the dissolution of CVCS, transfer of ownership of the land and assets will be disposed of in accordance with the school's by-laws. Champlain Valley CRC wishes to retain the first right of refusal on the real estate. Where does the Van Lunen Foundation come into play in this project? The Van Lunen Foundation has generously supported Champlain Valley Christian School through underwriting the total cost of the Pre-Campaign Study with The Timothy Group. The steering committee leadership plans to approach the Foundation again with a proposal to support the capital campaign, possibly through a matching gift, once sufficient funds have been pledged by the constituency of CVCS. The plan is to conduct the capital campaign with or without the support of the Van Lunen Foundation. Other local and regional foundations will also be approached for financial support. Where can I get more information on this campaign? Who do I call with additional questions? The capital campaign leadership consists of Ray Brands (Building Committee Chair), Marti Gosliga (Stewardship Committee Co-Chair), and Wes Oosterman (Stewardship Committee Co-Chair). You may contact any of these individuals for more information about the building project and/or the capital campaign. Educational Objectives
